In 1971 Office Business Systems partnered with Lanier Business Products, a dictation and transcription company, as its sole source of portable and desktop dictation machines. Lanier was the first company to introduce cassette based central dictation systems. Within a few short years OBS became the largest distributor of dictation system for the legal and medical markets in New Jersey.
During the 1990's like many other industries, the Internet changed the dictation and transcription industry dramatically. Now dictation could be moved across the Internet, eliminating costly phone charges. Though dictation was primarily accomplished with proprietary devices or telephone dictation, the dictation file once created was sent to transcriptionist at her PC via a internet connection. Managing these files, like with cassettes was still an issue until products such as Winscribe were introduced, which allows total management and work flow from the time a dictation is created to the point in which it is transcribed.
In the early 1980's Lanier introduced the first digital dictation system to meet the needs of hospital medical records departments. By the end of the decade the Lanier VoiceWriter was introduced which set the standard for digital dictation system. Unlike earlier systems, which were designed specifically for the radiology department, these systems dramatically improved the turnaround time of critical medical documents. With The advent of digital dictation systems becoming increasingly the norm for hospitals, the medical transcription companies (MTSO) could now have remote transcriptionist access to these systems via a standard telephone line. This change eliminated the need for cassette transportation and improved the efficiencies of medical dictation and transcription.
With Winscribe physicians, attorneys, and authors can dictate via a digital portable, PC dictation application, the telephone, or their PDA. Transcription is available immediately while dictation and transcription are automatically managed.
